The initial release of The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money occurred in 1936. However, its concepts had been developing for years. While still a student at Cambridge, Keynes had written to a friend, expressing his love for "free trade and free thought." The continued relevance of his views can be attributed to the freshness, clarity, and occasional ambiguity of Keynes' macroeconomic vision, as well as his spare prose, vivid descriptions, and limpid manner. High unemployment rates and significant wealth and income discrepancies were Keynes' primary concerns. He reasoned that individualism, "the most potent instrument to enhance the future," could only be preserved by limiting both. The 21st century may yet confirm his assertion.
